History: Wiki link for canon!Twilight. As for the AU stuff…
About mid-way through season 2, Twilight gets pulled into a little game on LiveJournal called Mayfield in July of 2011, a nightmare fueled town that forces people to live together in homes without their powers as they deal with horrific events. Here, Twilight learns of the existence of humans and is forced to go about life without her magic. This is important since magic is her life (and her defining talent) and she struggled to cope without it; in a world designed for humans, doing so was much easier said than done. Thankfully, she makes great friends with others who help her adapt to the town and read books without magic. No matter what goes down, Twilight will never turn down a book. Too bad for her that Mayfield’s selection sucked entirely. Thankfully, she was able to meet with others from Equestria (including her best friends and Princess Celestia) and their pre-determined friendship would help them survive the regular bloodbaths and traumatic events that were standard for Mayfield. Then by about mid-December, her memory blanks. OOCly, this is because of the move from LJ to DW and Twi’s previous mun didn’t transfer her over. She comes back to the town and her senses in February of 2012, when I apped her back into town.
She was still without her magic, but even after blanking out for so long, she retained her memories from before, so getting reacquainted with Mayfield was easy. She made it through the February event just fine and things, for once, seemed to turn out for the better…that is, until Princess Celestia was taken by the town (OOCly, she was dropped). Twilight hadn’t spoken to her since December of the previous year, so finding out this happened so shortly after coming back? It hurt her deep.
But more than that, it demonstrated the power Mayfield had over everyone, including the alicorn Twilight idolized and respected. She tried working through it, but the depression made her sanity drop to unhealthy levels as she traded in memories of Feeling Pinkie Keen (the episode that taught her the importance of just believing) and an eye so she could use magic again. After a few days of insanity-induced searching for Celestia, she was brought back to her senses and had to come to terms with being without her.
Once she was back to normal, Twilight went right back to her studies and making new friends while maintaining her old ones. She made some, she lost some…it was a harsh cycle and one she was slowly getting accustomed to, but even with so many cycles of this pattern, each loss of a friend hurt just as much as the last. Watching so many of them be lost to the town kind of scarred her, especially since a lot of ponies were dropped and she still wasn’t over the loss of Celestia. Thankfully, her surviving friends helped her through that and kept her moving forward.
It wasn’t until another evil event when Twi was forced through another personality upgrade; instead of venturing through the portals created by the town, she created a barrier around her house so she and her housemates would be safe from whatever the town did. However, one of her housemates, Zidane, got into a heated argument with her about being unable to save his friends because of this, but despite his pleas, she forced him to stay home.Through that, she felt she resonated with the ones in charge of Mayfield. She wanted to do the right thing, but upon coming to this realization, came to regret it. Through surviving this event, she learned that she had to stay true to herself since the town wanted everyone to become uniform and people who weren’t their true selves, so by being herself, she was fighting back.
A few months later, the town starts falling apart, one thing lead to another and the citizens of Mayfield were face to face with the man who created the town: Zemekis. There were hints about it over the years, but Zemekis confirmed that Mayfield was a virtual simulation created to escape the nuclear wasteland that was the real world (because the game is based on a segment of Fallout 3) and slapped down one of the bigger surprises the town had in store: everyone brought there was simply a digital clone of their original counterparts and as such, could never return home, even if the town crumbled. Zemekis brought everyone to Mayfield in hopes of saving everyone from the horrors of real life. A simple dream that got easily corrupted over time thanks to conspirators amongst his ranks and his own sanity tanking as time passed. Despite this, Twilight was able to reconcile with him and in the end, she forgave him for what he did. A huge step forward for her.
Afterwards, the town collapsed and they were all able to escape. They reached a deserted town far away from Mayfield; they were told that they would be able to live here for a few years while the server was still functional and despite being unable to return home, they would be able to live their lives however they chose in this new land. Twilight accepted this fate and began her life anew in this town, with the friends who returned from Mayfield’s captivity and with the ones who survived with her. It was a long and arduous journey and even though she never saw Celestia again, she knew in her heart that she made her and the rest of her friends proud.
Personality: First and foremost, Twilight is incredibly intelligent. After spending a large percentage of her life studying directly under Princess Celestia, she became an accomplished academic with great knowledge of math, the sciences, logic and of course, magic. Her magical potential is exactly what got her noticed by Celestia in the first place; during her entrance exam into a prestigious academy, a sonic rainboom startled her and accidentally triggered her magic, causing varying levels of magical chaos in the immediate area, ranging from turning her parents into plants and, in a twist of irony, passing her exam of hatching a dragon egg. Princess Celestia arrived on the scene to calm her down and after witnessing her great potential, invited her under her wing as her pupil. Twilight heartily agreed.
Despite being so magically proficient and considerably high ranked, Twilight maintains a level of modesty that keeps her compared to any other pony in Equestria. She knows she’s very talented, but she purposely avoids waving her accomplishments around in hubris; true talent speaks for itself, talents including a pure love of books and very high organization standards, standards that reach levels of obsessive compulsiveness. While this leaves her prone to freaking out over even the most minor of things, it helps define her as a true leader and one who can see things that others can’t. Even when things turn their bleakest, she will strive to keep others moving rather than make an exit herself; her memories of Ponyville and her time in Mayfield both taught her the importance not only of having friends, but keeping friends by her side and keeping them moving alongside her.
Twilight’s leadership capabilities shined greatly in Mayfield; the greatest things she learned from all of the bloodshed were lessons she mostly knew already, but took closer to heart: the importance of being understanding and the importance of staying true to yourself, no matter the circumstances. Ultimately, Mayfield wanted all of its residents to become brainwashed drones who would then be forced to play out their roles as given to them by the town, such as adult women being housewives and pets being nothing but animals. Those who held on to themselves faced the ever looming fear of being “droned” while watching others around them be lost to the town’s complete control. Once Twilight realized that ultimate defeat was when she surrendered to Mayfield, she simultaneously realized that resisting the droning was the best way to combat the town. Her morals were put to the test when she stood face to face with Zemekis, the man responsible for all of Mayfield. Despite her obvious displeasure towards his actions, she understood the good intentions that surrounded them and even admitted to going through something similar during her stay in the town. Their conversation turned casual and almost friendly until someone promptly blasted his head off with a shotgun.
Which, strangely enough, leads to the next aspect of Twilight’s personality: she saw a lot of scary things that most ponies don’t even think about in Equestria. Aside from losing the god figure of Equestria, Twilight witnessed Mayfield alter people’s memories of home, homicidal carnivals and most importantly, existentialism. The great plot twist of Mayfield was that the entire thing was a computer simulation and the captives in it were merely clones of their original selves; lines of code put together after scanning the originals who were back home. This revelation would understandably put anyone at risk of a mental breakdown, especially when someone like Twilight had those about minor things like books being out of order.
Surprisingly enough, she adapted pretty well to the idea. Thanks to the importance of learning to be true to herself no matter what, she understood that she’s an individual in her own right, even though she’s not the real Twilight Sparkle. Admittedly, a part of her lost hope after learning she could never return home, but she took comfort in the fact that the real Twilight was safe in Equestria and didn’t have to endure the trauma of Mayfield. Though she’s not technically real, Twilight knew she was real enough to be her own mare and took pride in surviving in overcoming everything that stood in her way.
Though obviously battle hardened, Twilight remains the intelligent, friendship loving unicorn she’s best known as. If anything, her time in Mayfield taught her the similar morals of compassion, understanding, self-sacrifice and other such noble causes that she would learn about in canon. Granted, these are rather extreme methods of learning such things, but they were learned nonetheless. Even when Mayfield told announced her life (along with everyone else’s) would end in a matter of years once the server hosting everyone loses power, she faced her imminent demise with an open mind and many friends by her side, ready to keep them moving one foot (or hoof) in front of the other. Though her life was cut considerably short because of this and all of the things she endured technically didn’t happen, Twilight continued to be the unicorn she knows she is because friendship, digital or otherwise, is magic.
Strengths:Her magical capabilities are as potent as ever. It’s still her greatest talent and with training, it allows her to learn magic from other worlds, as she did after being taken in as a student to Patchouli Knowledge, a powerful magic user from Gensokyo (the setting of the Touhou Project games).
There’s also her incredible intelligence and strong love for learning new things, which help her adapt to unfamiliar/uncomfortable scenarios fairly well.
Weaknesses:As a unicorn, she’s physically weak; all of that physical strength gets traded in for magic, perhaps moreso given her special talent. She’s likely the weakest of the mane 6.
Also her “incredible intelligence” often puts her at a disadvantage when others simply can’t understand what she’s saying. Using large words are regular with her, so she frequently has to dumb her sentences down for others.

Well, there are a lot of things I have to say about this predicament, but it’s…an admittedly touchy subject for me. A fair warning before I begin: unless you’re familiar with metaphysics, you should probably turn away before continuing to listen.
(It’s a difficult subject that she wants to go over, but can’t force anyone to listen.)
I…don’t want to say too much, but if there’s one thing you should remember, it’s that your experiences, no matter what anyone else will say, are just as real as anything else. What defines you as an individual isn’t a connection to the physical plane or the “real world;” it’s the things you witness, the lessons you learn, the friendships you make and what you take away from all of that. Life is about finding who you really are anyway, so it shouldn’t matter if your body is made of flesh or metal or binary code…
…You are who you are. Don’t ever let anyone else say otherwise. Only you know for sure who you really are.
Third Person:
Did she have every right to freak out about waking up back in Ponyville? Absolutely; there’s nothing quite like being told that you’ll never return home only to find that you…returned home. Without any knowledge of how she managed such. Instantly, her thoughts went to the updates many people went through; often times, they would be droned for a day, but come back with new memories of home. To Twilight, this was a potential danger to the Mayfield higher-ups since it gave people a look at what’s going on at home and could potentially take them back permanently.
However, those cases usually involve the person not remembering Mayfield when they go back home. And this most certainly was not the case. She remembered everything she saw and experienced in that town…they stood with her as she lay in bed…her bed. In her home. In Ponyville. In Equestria.
She spent a long time looking out her window, just watching the world she grew up in progress as it always did. Even when she stepped outside in mass confusion, the other ponies stopped to say hi. She climbed the highest hill and just…sat there, looking over the entire town. She…wasn’t sure what to make of this at all. There weren’t any others from Mayfield; just the ponies she knew from home. From this, Twilight came down to two possible explanations: either the server glitched and somehow recreated the virtual world into an exact replica of Equestria…or she was actually back home.
Regardless of what the real answer was, Twilight slumped to the ground, her face buried in her forelegs as she cried. There were sad tears, happy tears, ones filled with fear, some with confusion and the rest because of the unstable balance of the aforementioned emotions. Regardless of which emotion she wanted to feel or should have felt, the land before her eyes was her hometown…her home world.
